Why Do We Give?

We read repeatedly in scripture that we are called to give a portion of our wealth back to God and yet, it is often very hard to do this. We hesitate to give because, let’s be honest, it is scary. We depend on our money for security and the thought of giving up bits of our means of security is not easy. We must remember that actually, our only true source of security is not money – it is God.

 Everything we have is not our own, it was given to us by God. We are all called to be priests of creation and offer back from the good gifts He has blessed us with in thanksgiving. We have a responsibility to give an offering; we have a responsibility to support our church and its ministries; we have a responsibility to make sure our church and its ministries are sustained for generations to come.

 But, being the good and loving Father that He is, God also promises that when we give, what we have will in return be multiplied. When we give back to Him, “gifts from His own gifts”, with a generous heart, we will be transformed by our offering and in turn He will do great work with it and bless us through it.

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce;
then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.
–Proverbs 3:9-10

Why Give to the St. Iakovos Retreat Center?

The St. Iakovos Retreat Center is a home for the parishioners of the Metropolis of Chicago and all guests providing them the opportunity to grow closer to God and each other.

More than ever before, we are in need of a space where all people, young and old, can take refuge, engage with creation, experience God’s presence, and grow in fellowship with one another away from pressures and daily distractions of the world.

We invite you to become a partner in this ministry with us by offering a gift to the center. Please join us in making this dream a reality and help to sustain the St. Iakovos Retreat Center.
